Tips For Staying Connected This Holiday Season

Why Connection Matters for Seniors

Staying connected is vital for seniors, especially during the holiday season. Discover tips to help seniors maintain meaningful connections with loved ones. The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for many seniors, it can also be a period of loneliness and isolation. As we age, our social circles may shrink, and health challenges can make it harder to stay connected with family and friends. But staying connected is crucial for seniors’ mental and emotional well-being.

Embracing Technology

The best visit is an in-person visit. But when in-person is not an option, one way to maintain connections during the holidays is by embracing technology. Video calls through platforms like Zoom (zoom.com) or Skype (skype.com) can bridge the gap, making it possible for seniors to see and hear their family members in real time. For those less tech-savvy, consider setting up devices with simple interfaces designed for seniors.

Regular Check-Ins

Another approach is to plan regular check-ins. Consistency is key when it comes to maintaining connections. Encourage family and friends to schedule regular check-ins, whether through phone calls, video chats, or even traditional letters. These touchpoints can make seniors feel valued and remembered, particularly during the holiday season.

Involving Seniors in Holiday Preparations

Involving seniors in holiday preparations can also help them feel more connected to the celebrations. Whether it’s baking cookies, decorating the house, or wrapping gifts, these activities can provide opportunities for meaningful interactions. Even if done virtually, these shared experiences can create a sense of togetherness.

Participating in Community Events

Participation in community events is another valuable way to stay connected. Many communities offer holiday events specifically designed for seniors, such as holiday lunches, caroling, or craft sessions. Participating in these events can help seniors engage with their peers and feel a part of the larger community. If in-person events aren’t possible, many organizations now offer virtual alternatives.

Creating New Traditions

Creating new traditions can also be meaningful. If old traditions are no longer feasible due to distance or health reasons, consider creating new ones that can be easily adapted. This could be something as simple as watching a holiday movie together over the phone or exchanging handwritten notes. New traditions can be just as meaningful and help seniors feel connected.

My mother n law is in this place and we love it! The care she gets is so much better than so many other places she has been. Her room feels like a room helps her feel like she is at home. We are so please with this place to the staff to how hard they have also worked to keep residents safe from covid 19.

Placed my Aunt here and she loves it. Late one night she lost her contacts down the drain and Brooke took apart the drain and found them both. They pay attention to detail!

Directly from my heart, "the best of the best" truly, we as guests, were given the red carpet. The question of "theres room for improvement" never came up. A first class operation, starting with the numerous amount of staff, the gorgeous facility, and the many activities made available to the residents. Sincerity was indeed noticed. Don't change a thing.

Great facility and caring staff. My mother was there for a short time for respite care with hospice. The rooms have a nice set up and are very clean. Everyone we met had a great attitude and was very caring. The staff was awesome starting with the director who sets the tone got everything in place, the wellness director who spent a lot of time with mom and was very attentive, the program director was great for the short time we were there but we loved their happy hour with the residents. Mom got great care from the aides and received her medications on time. The kitchen staff who brought meals and housekeeping did a great job. We made the right choice by choosing Riverside Gardens for Mom's final days and cannot thank them enough. Thank you.

I'm a Go Bus driver, and I was visiting one of my passengers who invited me over for happy hour after my shift. So I accepted. The staff was very pleasant. So nice, and they all knew who I was from being a driver. They accepted me right in. From being Riverside Elementary School; They did quite a remarkable job remodeling it. The residents there are really nice and welcoming, and I will have to do this again, as I have been welcomed back anytime, by the staff and residence.
